How do you brew yellow tea?

I’ve just received a sample of yellow tea and before brewing it I would love to ask you how you do that so that I don’t mess up anything (it’s just a mall sample so I don’t have much tea to experiment with). The exact tea is Meng Ding Huang Ya. I’ve read that yellow tea is similar to green tea, does it mean that it is brewed in a same way: 70-80C/4-6mins? Or is it more like white tea: 60-70C/5-10mins? Or may be something else? Do you make an empty infusion to wash leaves? Please advice.
*mall=small ))

Yellow tea is most similar to green tea, and, for the most part, is best brewed like a green tea. However, it’s also a matter of personal taste. If you have a small sample, you may be stuck. I’ve ordered small samples of Yellow Tea before and tried brewing them a few times and not really had enough time to settle upon the best way of brewing it.

Also, if you’re not really a yellow tea enthusiast, prepare for it to be a bit odd. I’ve sampled only one Huangya, and it was strange. I’m still not sure if I like it or not.

Do you have enough tea to do gong fu brewing? If you’re stuck with a very small sample and you need to brew it western style (1 teaspoon per cup), and only have enough for one cup, I’d start with a 3 minute infusion, sip it, and if it’s not strong enough, then let it steep longer. I wouldn’t go too low on the temperature…try about 80C. Yellow tea is slightly oxidized so if anything, it’s farther from a green tea and been nudged just a tad in the direction of an oolong.

I’d be curious to hear how this comes out. Consider contacting me through the contact form on RateTea.net and letting me how it goes. I run the site and that goes directly to my email.
