How does one make a miniature figurine?
I’m interested in making my own miniatures for games like DnD and Shadowrun, but I’m not sure how to make a mold or what materials are best to make casts out of.
If you are wanting to create a unique figure with no molding, try visiting this page at Reaper Miniatures:

Here, you can use items known as armatures. These are essentially skeletons of miniatures you can sculpt onto with those hardening epoxy like modelling clays.
Another thing I can recommend is that if you see parts of things that you like but are attached to different miniatures, then you can use a technique from model car and airplane builders known as “kit-busting”, where they mix and match parts with some tweaking and they can make a custom item for whatever project they were thinking of. You can do the same by purchasing said parts and using them for whatever your plans are.
A favorite topic for kit-busting for miniatures is using the spare heads and other body parts of undead. With enough modelling clay, you can make your undead look like they are coming out of the ground. That’s how I was able to turn a box of 20 skeleton figures into double that with the spare parts.
In short, there is no need to make a mold if all you are doing is creating a unique figure. However, you can also, before painting your “unique” figure, do a two part silicone casting of it so you can do a solid resin casting. Here is one supplier of such RTV silicone and resin casting:

Let me know how your project comes along, complete with photos at each stage.
Thanks,
Alvin R.
