Polished Tile
Grouting porous stone tile?
I have installed a porous stone border in my shower. The rest of the shower is 4×4 polished tile. I would like the natural stone (little holes) to be not filled in with grout. Should I seal the face of the tiles first then grout or should I use a grout release agent then grout or even more dramatic – should I tape off the face of the tile, grout then seal?
The border is made up of little 2″ porous tiles glued to a mesh backer.
grout release, made by AquaMix, is exactly what you are looking for. it temporarily fills all those holes. it’s a gel-type soap made specifically to fill in the holes in unfilled stone and masonry before grouting. http://www.aquamix.com/for_professionals/products/pg_detail.asp?pdid=26171&pgid=9833
Tape would work, but would take far longer to do, and you’ll end up with stripes where it might be obvious (depending on your skill level) where the tape was during the grouting process.
Good luck!
